the problem

echo chambers. polarization. online hate & toxic behavior. social online networks and online communities are aggregators of conflict, false beliefs, and influence operations. extremist are able to use the online space to deceive susceptible individuals, infiltrate social protest movements and undermine democratic processes.

the need for change

Social networks need to be free, humanist and deliberative spaces of communication that promote a contest of ideas. Online communities need moderation, not censorship and deplatformization. We need inoculative measures against support for violent extremism. Communities need to be capable of preventing extremist ideology from gaining traction while upholding free speech.

In an emerging digital society, we need automated moderation technologies that are capable of unbiased, meaningful engagement with online communities and their members. Technical agents have the capability to establish themselves within communities in order to help communities and their members navigate freely and safely in online environments.

governments worldwide increase their spending on combating violent extremism and domestic terrorism. the sittings US President’s 2022 budget will “provide over $100 million in additional funds to address the rising threat of domestic violent extremism and domestic terrorism".

 

The global  content moderation market is estimated to be  US$ 9.8 bn in 2022 and poised to reach US$ 26 Bn by 2032.
